The Ottó Herman Museum, located in Miskolc, is the seat of a county-wide organisation consisting of 7 museums of regional heritage, 3 specialised collections, 3 memorials and 5 exhibition areas. The institution, originally established in 1899, was named after the multi-disciplinary scientist, Ottó Herman, in 1953.

Half a million works of art and precious collections

About half a million registered works of art can be viewed in the museum´s galleries . It offers the largest archaeological collection in Hungary, including remarkable relics of the palaeolithic and neolithic ages, as well as of population migrations and the Magyar conquest. The most comprehensive petrographical and mineralogical collection in the Carpathian Basin is also to be found in the Museum.

The fine arts collection contains masterpieces by the most respected Hungarian artists, while the historical section offers a rich collection of items to do with industrial history. The internationally-renowned ethnographic collection includes items from Matyó and Palóc ethnical folklore. It also offers one of the largest national collections of coins and medals.

A highly reputed public institution

The Ottó Herman Museum was selected to serve as a scientific research centre by the Ministry of Culture & Education in 1985. Since 1997, it has accommodated the off-site Cultural History & Museology Department of Miskolc University.
